It was 1998; with the fusion of two major service organizations in this 'City of Palaces and Parks', Rotary Mysore and Jain Medical Relief Society, came together in their endeavor, sensing the urgent need to reinforce the existing rehabilitation facility available to the orthopedically handicapped, and thus to bring back those from the unfortunate lot into the main stream of society, in and around Mysore, with population around 8,00,000 and other towns in the vicinity with population of another 4,50,000 people, a state-of-art artificial limb manufacturing centre, to fabricate light weight, user friendly, and rugged artificial limbs (Prosthetics and Orthotics), Caliper for the Polio afflicted, and other auxiliary supporting aids required by the orthopedically handicapped; all this to b e philanthropist was established.
This is the first centre of its kind to be established by Rotary in our District. Through the services of this centre we have had the unique experience of seeing an otherwise rendered immobile person, solely dependent on others for his/her basic movement, now in a position to independent, manage on their own, and thus join into mainstream of society and earn his/her own livelihood.
The recent addition to our Artificial Limb Centre has been an 'Outreach Camp Mobile Ambulance', under Matching Grant with the co-operation of Rotary Club of Fort Colins - Breakfast club, USA (RI Dist. 5440), Rotary Foundation and Rotary Mysore, was formally handed over by the District Governor Rtn. Chandrashekar, to the Limb Centre to undertake camps in the interior rural areas, to undertake on the spot measurement of the amputated limb of identified beneficiaries, thereafter fabricate, and fit the beneficiary with the artificial limb then and there, and also for imparting training to the beneficiary on the proper use, care and maintenance of the Artificial Limb.
We have till date completed 12 outreach camps in the last 15 months, within and outside our RI District, and have distributed close to 650 Artificial Limbs free of charge, and have had the joy and satisfaction of seeing 'The Limp-To a Leap- Thro a Limb'.
In days to come, we plan to set up a training centre, for imparting Vocational Training to the handicapped, for placement in industry or for self-employment. Impart technical training to youth, to set up their own small units to manufacture and undertake repair of artificial limbs. An R&D Centre for the manufacture of lighter, and user-friendly limbs. Let us remember 'a small step taken by us today, will help our physically challenged brethren take a giant leap for their morrow'.
So think even as you read this, somewhere a child a losing out on a chance of a secure future, comfort of a home and family, the love and care of the near and dear ones. For his life has been shattered by an accident, he has lost a limb, and thus languishes in plain abandonment. Here you have soul, lost, lonely and very afraid, 'Mankind is our Business'.
'Mankind is one, Let's build bridges of friendship-Share Rotary, Serve People'.
